About this tour

Salkantay is a mountain of Cusco, very close to it is the Humantay Lake, it is also a route to Machu Picchu.

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco - Mollepata - Challacancha - Lago Humantay - Soraypampa

We pick you up from your hotel between 4:30 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. and then drive about 2 hours to Mollepata for breakfast and then we go to Challacancha where we start our Salkantay trek.

As soon as we are in Challacancha. The cook and the muleteers will pack all the camping equipment and things to cook and we start walking. The first 30 minutes will be a little uphill to get to the canal and then we will hike for 2 hours until we arrive to Soraypampa (1st camp) and there we will have lunch with panoramic views.

Of beautiful snow-capped mountains (Humantay; 4120m / 13500ft and Salkantay; 6271m / 20575ft): just the beginning!

We will begin our trek up Salkantay to Soraypampa, our first campsite on the Salkantay Trek (3800m / 11750ft; the highest and coldest campsite of the trip) we will be very close to Cusco’s second highest mountain Salkantay.

In the afternoon after lunch we climb to the Humantay Lake.

Day 2: Soraypampa - Salkantay Pass - Huaracmachay - Chaullay

After breakfast, we start walking around 5:30 am, because this day will be the longest day, the first 4 hours will be uphill to reach the highest point of Salkantay Trek (4650 m / 15200 ft) located halfway between 2 huge mountains; The Salkantay on the right and Tucarhuay on the left. From the pass, the views of the 2 snow-capped mountains are incredible. Snow can be found here.

After a rest, we continue our hike (downhill) through a spectacular cloud forest to Huayracpunku, where we have lunch. We hike again after lunch and head towards the jungle brow until we reach our second camp of chaullay or Colcapampa (3000 m / 9800 ft).

DAY 2: Total distance: 19 km (approx.)
Estimated trekking time: 8 – 9 hours.
Highest point of altitude: 4,650 m (approx.)
Campsite altitude: 2,750 m (approx.).

Day 3: Chaullay - La Playa - Lucmabamba o Sta Teresa

After breakfast, at 6.30 am, we start walking through the high jungle crossing the Lluskamayo River and a variety of small streams to reach La Playa. We walk for approximately 6 hours.

Today we will pass through valleys and have wonderful views of waterfalls, tropical fruits, plants and as soon as we are on the beach where we have lunch and then we head towards sta teresa where we camp and then to the hot springs of cocalmayo.

(Option to stay in Lucmabamba to go to llactapata, depending on the weather).

Day 4: Lucmabamba - Llactapata - Hidroeléctrica - Aguas Calientes

We will have breakfast at 8 am and depart from our campsite of Lluscamayo.

We walk through an original Inca Trail site to Llactapata where you will have the opportunity to see Machupicchu in the distance (one of the most beautiful places to see Machupicchu), then we continue walking, passing through a variety of crops, coca, banana, etc..

Until we reach the hydroelectric plant. And after lunch, we continue walking approximately two and a half hours along the path of the train to reach the town of Aguas Calientes, where we spend the night in a hostel in Aguas Calientes, you can take advantage of the hot springs of the town of Aguas Calientes (entrance fee, 10 soles), a real pleasure after finishing the Salkantay.

DAY 4: Total distance: 12 km (approx.)
Estimated trekking time: 5 – 6 hours.
Highest point of altitude: 1,600 m (approx.).
Lodge (hot springs) altitude: 1,900 m (approx.)

Day 5: Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Aguas Calientes - Ollantaytambo - Cusco

The most important day of the Salkantay trek. We get up early in the morning around 4 am to 4:30 am for breakfast and leave to hike to Machupicchu, which takes an hour and a half to Machupicchu, but there is another option to take the first bus that leaves at 5:30 to Machupicchu (25 minutes duration) to appreciate the magnificent city as the sun rises.

There will be a guided tour (approximately 2 hours) and, after this, you can explore the mysterious city on your own. If you still have energy, you can also climb Huaynapicchu (2720m / 8890ft). It takes 45 minutes to reach the top. And after enjoying the city of Machupicchu, you should go down to Aguas Calientes to take the train back to Ollantaytambo and then take the bus back to Cusco.

(Option to take the bus back from Hidroelectrica to Cusco).

DAY 5: Total distance: 4 km (approx.)
Estimated walking time: 1 to 2 hours.
Highest point of altitude: 2,700 m (approx.)
